Aortic surgery

Aorta.png

The aorta is the main artery in the human body. It originates from the left ventricle of and extends towards the abdomen.

Diseases of the aorta that require surgical intervention are either congenital (Marfan or Ehler Danlos Disease) or degenerative (aneurysm). If the diameter of the aorta exceeds 5,5cm the international recommendation is replacement to avoid a rupture or dissection (splicing of the vessel wall).

The standard procedure in aortic surgery is replacement of the diseased segment with a knitted graft prosthesis. As aortic diseases in general are very complex, a variety of different surgical techniques have been developed. They all aim to reduce the risk of the procedure and speed up recovery. The following techniques can either stand alone or be offered as hybrid procedures.

Together with my team I offer the following services:

  • Replacement of the ascending aorta, aortic arch and descending aorta (elephant trunk)
  • Valved conduit graft with re-implantation of the coronary arteries (Bental procedure with biological of mechanical heart valves)
  • Valve sparing replacement of the aorta (David or Yacoub procedure)
  • Hybrid procedure together with interventional endovascular grafting (De-branching) in collaboration with vascular surgeons
  • Aortic and concomitant cardiac surgery such as CABG and valve surgery

The choice of procedure and / or heart valve prosthesis deserves an individual assessment and requires adjustment to your needs and expectations.
