Mitral valve repair and replacement

The mitral valve, also known as the bicuspid valve or left atrioventricular valve, is a valve with two flaps in the heart, that lies between the left atrium and the left ventricle. The mitral valve along with the tricuspid valve are known collectively as the atrioventricular valves because they are located between the atria and the ventricles of the heart.

Surgery aims primarily to repair and preserve the valve using complex techniques with a success rate of 80-90%. If the repair is not possible the valve can be replaced by either biological or mechanical prosthesis. The surgery can be either performed conventionally by a full sternotomy (split of your breast bone) or minimal invasive using limited access routes to reduce pain and achieve better cosmetic results. Both approaches can be performed without impairing safety.

Together with my team I offer the following services:

  • Mitral valve repair
  • Mitral valve replacement
  • Mitral valve and concomitant cardiac surgery such as CABG and aortic surgery
  • Conventional or minimal access surgery
  • The choice of procedure and / or heart valve prosthesis deserves an individual assessment and requires adjustment to your needs and expectations.
